Introducing The ACHA Advocacy ECHO Program
August 27, 2025The 5th edition of the KILELE Challenge Hike on 26th July saw cancer survivors, caregivers, and their supporters take on the steep and rugged slopes of Mt. Longonot, a dormant volcano that tested not just endurance but the power of unity and courage.
Since its inception in March 2024, the KILELE Challenge Hike Series has become a journey of reclaiming life beyond cancer. Each month, participants trade hospital walls for the open embrace of nature, discovering new strength, sharing their stories, and breaking the silence around cancer survivorship.
For many, the Mt. Longonot climb symbolized the steep emotional and physical recovery journey they’ve faced and conquered.
“Every step up the crater felt like a step away from fear,” shared Sister Margaret Katunge, who is undergoing breast cancer treatment. “When you’re walking beside people who’ve been through the same pain, the mountain doesn’t feel so heavy.”
The hike challenged participants with its intense ascent and unpredictable terrain, demanding resilience and teamwork. Yet, at every turn, laughter and encouragement echoed through the trails, a living testament to the solidarity that defines the #KileleChallenge.
“We use hiking as a tool to rebuild mental, physical, and social wellness,” said Jacqueline Ogingo, Programs Officer at KILELE Health. “It’s incredible to watch survivors and caregivers push past their limits, not to prove their strength to others, but to themselves.”
As the team reached the crater rim, exhausted yet triumphant, a sense of victory filled the air. The sweeping view of Longonot’s crater wasn’t just a reward for the climb but a reflection of every participant’s inner journey from pain to purpose.
“Longonot reminded us that healing is not linear. Some slopes are steeper, but the summit is always worth it,” said Churchill Otieno, Navigation Officer KILELE Health.
The #KileleChallenge now continues toward Mt. Kilimambogo, and eventually, the ultimate climb — Mt. Kenya. With each hike, the movement grows stronger, carrying the stories, hopes, and dreams of those who walk not just for themselves, but for every warrior still fighting.
