The Role of Nutrition in Cancer Care and Prevention
September 2, 2024Ishiara, June 22, 2024 – A workshop aimed at empowering cancer survivors, caregivers, and patients was held at Ishiara Level 5 Hospital. Organized by KILELE Health and A Fresh Chapter Group, in partnership with the County Government of Embu, the event was a key part of the “Thamani Yetu” project, which focuses on creating awareness of life beyond diagnosis and psychosocial support for affected individuals in Mbeere North Constituency.
The “A Fresh Chapter – Mizizi Workshop” aimed to equip cancer survivors and their support networks with vital skills in emotional healing and awareness, acknowledging the dark and light aspects of their cancer experience. This workshop underscored the community’s dedication to improving cancer care and awareness.
The workshop was attended by notable figures among them; Mr. Jamal Runyenje, County Executive Committee (CEC) Officer Embu County, Dr. Mugendi, Medical Superintendent Ishiara Level 5 Hospital, and Mr. Walter, Sub-County Health Coordinator. Hospital staff, KILELE Health team members, cancer survivors, caregivers, and patients from the region also participated in the event.
Program Highlights: The workshop covered essential topics in emotional cancer care, including:
- Emotional Healing: Techniques and strategies to aid in the healing process.
- Emotional Awareness: Understanding and acknowledging the wide range of emotions experienced during the cancer journey.
- Navigating Complex Emotions: Addressing both positive and negative emotions and learning how to cope effectively.
Collaborative Goals: The partnership between A Fresh Chapter, KILELE Health, and the Embu County Government aims to enhance cancer care services by:
- Providing continuous support and education to cancer survivors and caregivers.
- Promoting early diagnosis and dispelling myths surrounding cancer.
- Fostering a supportive community environment that encourages open dialogue and practical learning.
Ms. Benda Kithaka, the Executive Director of KILELE Health, highlighted the significance of these initiatives, emphasizing the importance of ongoing support and education in cancer care. Mr. Runyenje, the CEC for Health, reiterated the county’s commitment to enhancing health services, mentioning recent efforts such as promoting healthcare workers and passing the County Health Bill that will ensure facility manage their own revenues

The workshop featured educational and interactive sessions, including lectures, skits, and discussions led by the A Fresh Chapter team. These sessions were designed to engage participants and ensure they could apply the learned principles in real-life situations.
The event concluded with heartfelt testimonials from participants and an inspiring address by Dr. Josephine Mbae, a cancer survivor and technical advisor, who urged the audience to seek early diagnosis and dispel myths surrounding cancer.
This impactful workshop marks a significant advancement in supporting and empowering cancer survivors in the region, showcasing the strong collaboration between KILELE Health, local health authorities, and the broader community.
