KILELE Health Hosts First Support Group Meeting for Cancer Survivors and Caregivers
February 19, 2025Cancer patients, survivors, and caregivers have unique lived experiences that, when shared effectively, can influence healthcare policies, improve treatment access, and drive positive change in communities. Recognizing the need to amplify these voices, KILELE Health Association organized a Storytelling for Impact – Advocacy Training to equip cancer warriors and caregivers with essential storytelling and advocacy skills.
The training, led by expert trainer Maureen Amakabane, took place from February 17th to 21st, providing participants with practical tools to harness their personal experiences and turn them into compelling advocacy narratives.
A Safe Space for Growth and Empowerment
The sessions were designed to help participants effectively tell their stories and communicate their journeys, whether to policymakers, the media, or the public. They learned to structure their narratives, build confidence in public speaking, and tailor their messages to mobilize support, drive policy action, and inspire change.
Through interactive exercises and expert feedback, participants refined their storytelling skills and embraced the power of their voices.
“This training has helped me shape my story in a way that will create positive impact, drive change and raise awareness. I now understand how to use my voice effectively,” shared Joan Kamba, sinuses cancer warrior.
“Through this training, I have enhanced my storytelling skills and learned how to advocate for better medical care, provide psychosocial support, and share my story across social media and TV platforms,” added Joan Wangari, pancreatic cancer warrior.
A Milestone Achievement
To mark the successful completion of the program, participants were awarded certificates, symbolizing their growth and readiness to step into advocacy roles within their communities.
Driving Change Beyond the Training Room
Through its commitment to storytelling and advocacy, KILELE Health empowers cancer warriors and caregivers with the skills to transform their lived experiences into meaningful action, addressing quality of life in survivorship. With their newly acquired expertise, these advocates are now better positioned to raise awareness, influence healthcare decisions, and drive lasting impact in the fight against cancer.
