Cancer Awareness Takes Centre Stage at Nairobi’s Global Satellite Backyard Championship
October 30, 2024KILELE Health Association hosted its end-year reunion on November 2, 2024 in Nairobi, Kenya. The event gathered cancer survivors, caregivers, and patients to celebrate their resilience and achievements, while fostering community support and advocacy for improved health services.
This gathering offered participants a chance to reflect on the progress made throughout the year and set the stage for future goals. The attendees developed actionable strategies to advance advocacy, sustainable growth, and improved healthcare for cancer survivors.
A Celebration of Resilience
Survivors; Josephine Leshao, Pamela Savai, and Mary Nafula shared their personal journeys of overcoming cancer, inspiring hope and solidarity among attendees. Together, they shed light on the critical role of psychosocial and mental health support, community advocacy, and accessible healthcare for cancer survivors.
Building Financial and Emotional Stability
Felix Mutiso from Zamara Group Limited emphasized the necessity of financial planning as a cornerstone for long-term stability, particularly for cancer survivors and caregivers. He highlighted the role of structured savings, insurance, and pension plans in creating a secure financial future.
“Regular contributions to financial safety nets like savings and pensions are vital for ensuring access to healthcare and financial security, even in retirement,” he said.
KILELE Health Executive Director, Benda Kithaka, urged community-based organizations (CBOs) to actively engage in advocacy efforts and leverage media platforms to amplify the voices of cancer survivors.
“Increasing community involvement through public participation, education initiatives, and media engagements is key to raising cancer awareness and enhancing prevention efforts,” she noted.
KILELE’s Strategic Vision
Dr. Ndinda Kusu, KILELE Health board member, outlined the organization’s strategic goals, emphasizing its commitment to empowering cancer survivors. The strategy focuses on providing education, training, and corporate engagement opportunities while prioritizing economic empowerment, mental wellness, and innovative partnerships with technology firms to enhance outreach and drive transformative solutions.
