KILELE Challenge Hike at Mt. Kilimambogo: Building Strength for the Climb Ahead
September 9, 2025
Cancer Survivors and Caregivers Conquer Thanju – Kiambicho – Sagana in Honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month
November 6, 2025The September edition of the KILELE Challenge Hike Series on 27th September took the spirit of survivorship to conquer Elephant Hills, one of Kenya’s most challenging trails known for its steep ascent and unpredictable weather. Coinciding with Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, this edition was not only a physical test but also a heartfelt tribute to young warriors fighting cancer and the caregivers walking beside them.
“This hike wasn’t easy,” admitted Eunice Wambua, a breast cancer survivor. “Halfway through, I wanted to turn back. But then I looked around and saw the faces of others who’ve been through even tougher battles. I told myself, if I could fight cancer, I can climb this hill.”
A Journey Beyond Limits
Elephant Hills is often called the mountain that tests your spirit, and for the WanaKilele community, it lived up to its name.
Each muddy step, each slippery rock, each breath in the cold mist carried stories of survival, rediscovery, loss, and unwavering hope.
“This hike wasn’t easy,” admitted Eunice Wambua, a breast cancer survivor. “Halfway through, I wanted to turn back. But then I looked around and saw people who’ve been through even tougher battles. I told myself, if I could fight cancer, I can climb this hill.”
As hikers climbed higher, helping one another through the muddy terrain, it became clear that this was more than a physical journey. This climb, much like the cancer journey, reminded them that resilience grows strongest when tested and that no one heals alone.
Why This Hike Mattered
September’s hike aligned with Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, reinforcing the collective responsibility to support children and families affected by cancer.
Through this edition of the hike, KILELE Health reaffirmed its commitment to:
- Raising awareness on childhood and adult cancers
- Supporting survivors and caregivers through community-based wellness
- Promoting holistic healing nurturing mind, body, and spirit
- Demonstrating that movement and connection are powerful tools for recovery
Since its launch in March 2024, the KILELE Challenge Hike Series has grown steadily from the gentle paths of Arboretum, to the steep rocks of Kilimambogo, and now to Elephant Hills.
Yet this particular climb stood as a true proving ground for the community’s ultimate goal: the Mt. Kenya Summit.
Despite the rain and the cold, hikers pushed forward—showing that healing does not wait for perfect conditions. Healing happens in motion.
“We move together—that’s our rhythm,” said Churchill Otieno, KILELE’s Hike Navigation Officer. “When one person slows down, the rest wait. Healing isn’t a race. It’s a journey we take side by side.”
The Power of Togetherness
For survivors like Esther, and many others walking this path, the hike was more than a personal victory it was a declaration. A statement that cancer may change the body, but it can never take away spirit.
“Reaching the peak felt like reclaiming something cancer once tried to take from me,” Esther said quietly at the summit, the wind brushing her face. “My confidence. My joy. My strength. Today, I got them back.”
Looking Ahead
As the team descended from Elephant Hills, tired but fulfilled, there was a quiet understanding among them, that every climb prepares the heart for the next one. And as October’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month approached, the group carried that energy forward — ready to continue walking beyond limits.
The KILELE Challenge Hike Series isn’t just about mountains. It’s about moments of connection, courage, and collective healing. Because at KILELE, one thing remains true:
Healing happens in motion and no mountain is too high when we climb together.
