Cancer Survivors and Caregivers Hike Elephant Hills in Honor of Childhood Cancer Awareness Month
September 30, 2025The October edition of the KILELE Challenge Hike Series brought together cancer survivors, caregivers, and supporters for a deeply meaningful experience at Thanju-Kiambicho-Sagana. The hike coincided with Breast Cancer Awareness Month, amplifying the global call for awareness, early detection, and access to quality cancer care.
Why October Matters
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a time to create awareness, honour the millions of lives affected by breast cancer, and reaffirm the global commitment to equitable access to care and improved survival for all.
The 2025 theme, “Every Story is Unique, Every Journey Matters,” calls for increased awareness and behaviour change toward early detection, advocacy for improved access to care, and the celebration of lived experiences.
Aligned with this theme, the KILELE Challenge on 25th October sought to highlight the importance of health promotion, early detection, and timely diagnosis linked to comprehensive treatment.
A Trail of Courage and Connection
For many participants, the Hike was more than a physical challenge, it was a symbol of endurance, hope, and collective healing. The trail’s steep paths and rocky terrains mirrored the ups and downs of the cancer journey: demanding, unpredictable, but ultimately conquerable with community support.
Among those on the trail was Sister Margaret Katunga, a breast cancer survivor whose presence embodied resilience and faith. For her, every step was a declaration that healing happens in motion.
“Walking with others who understand what it means to fight for your life reminds me that I’m not alone,” Sister Margaret shared. “The hike gave me space to breathe, reflect, and reconnect with the strength I sometimes forget I have.”
The Power of Community
Throughout the day, laughter and encouragement echoed through the trails as survivors leaned on caregivers, and caregivers drew energy from survivors. What began as a hike soon became a moving symbol of solidarity and shared purpose.
KILELE Health continues to emphasize that healing is holistic, nurturing not just physical fitness, but also mental, social, and emotional well-being. By walking together, participants reinforced the belief that healing is not a solo journey, and that wellness thrives in community.
How KILELE Keeps the Spirit Alive
Since March 2025, the KILELE Challenge Hike Series has united cancer survivors, caregivers, and other allies, from Arboretum to Elephant Hills, and now Thanju-Kiambicho-Sagana. Each climb builds not just endurance, but also community, purpose, and a shared commitment to living beyond limits.
As the pink ribbons fade and the hiking boots rest, one truth remains unwavering: healing happens in motion and no mountain is too high when we walk together
