Cancer Awareness Takes Centre Stage at Nairobi’s Global Satellite Backyard Championship
October 30, 2024On August 13th, 2024, a significant cancer sensitization session took place at the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Headquarters in Nairobi. This event, organized by Champions of Hope in collaboration with Nairobi Hospice and KILELE Health Association, aimed to raise awareness about cancer prevention, early detection, patient navigation, and psychosocial support.
The event featured notable figures in cancer advocacy, such as Judy Wanjiru (Cervical Cancer Survivor), Eunice Wambua (Breast Cancer Survivor), Amina Paul (Acute Anaemia advocate), and Kui Kariuki (Breast Cancer Survivor). Key stakeholders also attended, including Robert Marine, Executive Director of Champions of Hope, Mercy Jim Kamau, Vice Chair of Champions of Hope, Benda Kithaka, Executive Director of KILELE Health Association, Ruth Njeri, and Winnie Mwangi, both from Nairobi Hospice.
DISCUSSION HIGHLIGHTS
DCI officers and staff were sensitized on the importance of cancer prevention, and early detection, the critical role of psychosocial support for patients, survivors and caregivers, and the need for survivorship care. Cancer survivors shared personal stories of their cancer journeys, dispelling myths and emphasizing that cancer is not a death sentence. They emphasized that equipping cancer patients with knowledge is vital for their treatment journey.
The discussions centred around patient navigation through the healthcare system, combating the stigma of cancer, and advocating for timely screening and treatment.
Advocacy was recognized as a critical driver for systemic change, ensuring that survivors’ voices help shape healthcare systems. The importance of comprehensive palliative and survivorship care was stressed, aiming to enhance survivors’ mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being.
Call to Action: Role of DCI in Cancer Prevention
As a governing body, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) was urged to play a pivotal role in championing cancer prevention by:
- Advocating for policies that ensure access to treatment, promote cancer prevention, early detection, and support initiatives like HPV vaccination programs.
- Collaborating with health organizations to launch campaigns that educate the public on cancer risk factors, symptoms, and the importance of regular screenings.
- Implementing workplace health programs that focus on cancer prevention, provide regular screenings, and offer support to employees affected by cancer.
- Strengthening cancer prevention efforts by partnering with NGOs, healthcare providers, and international organizations, enhancing the reach and impact of these initiatives.
- Advocating for legislation that promotes cancer prevention by regulating harmful chemicals, controlling tobacco and alcohol use, and addressing environmental pollutants.
- Providing comprehensive training for healthcare providers, law enforcement, and the community on cancer prevention, early detection, and patient support, ensuring a knowledgeable and proactive approach.
DCI officers expressed their commitment to advancing policies that enhance cancer prevention and early detection within governmental institutions. They also pledged to advocate for stronger regulations limiting substances that contribute to cancer risks, such as alcohol and tobacco. This event represented a significant milestone in raising awareness and establishing a supportive network for cancer prevention and care.
