KILELE Health Association Honors Cancer Survivors at End-Year Reunion
November 13, 2024October 19 –21, 2024, Thika Grove Chania – Over the Mashujaa weekend, Thika Grove Chania became the vibrant setting for the Global Satellite Backyard Championship, where athletes, ultra-runners, cancer advocates and survivors, gathered to combine their passion for running with a shared mission: advancing cancer awareness.
Organized by Ultra Runners Kenya in collaboration with key partners including KILELE Health Association and running clubs like Karura Fitness Club, the event drew nearly 100 participants to the Nairobi Backyard race, who ran 6.5 km in hourly intervals. Leading the charge were 15 elite Kenyan ultra-marathon runners, selected from the 3rd National Backyard Ultra in March, who earned the chance to represent Kenya in this year’s Global Championship.

Spotlight on Cancer Awareness
The event’s focus extended far beyond the race, bringing cancer awareness, prevention, and crucial psychosocial support for patients and survivors into sharp focus. KILELE Health set up informative stations throughout the course, offering participants and spectators valuable educational resources on cervical cancer prevention, HPV vaccination, breast cancer detection, early detection practices, and symptoms to watch for. Through interactive displays, discussions, and survivor-led sessions, attendees gained invaluable insights into the journey of survivorship and the importance of regular health check-ups.
Why Cancer Awareness?
Cancer remains one of Kenya’s most pressing health challenges, contributing significantly to morbidity and mortality across the country. By pairing the excitement of a global athletic event with advocacy, the event organizers reached a diverse audience, underscoring the importance of early diagnosis and robust support networks. With KILELE Health’s involvement, the public had access to valuable resources, fostering awareness and encouraging proactive health habits.
Events like the Global Satellite Backyard Championship exemplify how community engagement and partnerships can address essential health issues. Just as every stride in the race draws runners closer to the finish line, every effort in cancer awareness moves society toward a healthier and more informed future for all.
