KILELE CHALLENGE BEGINS: A New Path to Holistic Healing for Cancer Warriors

Faith in Action: Faith Leaders Unite to Address Health Challenges affecting Women in Africa
May 20, 2025After conquering the Arboretum in March, the second edition of the #KileleChallenge led a determined team of cancer warriors, caregivers, and their allies into the heart of Ngong Forest. The forest’s rugged trails offered not only a physical challenge, but also an emotional release; a place to breathe, reflect, and rebuild.
This wasn’t just another walk in nature. It was a declaration: “We are still here. Still moving. Still healing.”
“It wasn’t about reaching the forest. It was about showing up for ourselves, together,” said Mercy Kamau, a cancer survivor whose presence and words captured the spirit of the day.
Building Resilience One Hike at a Time
The hike began with light stretches, grounding affirmations, all led by our trusted facilitators from Arch Trek and Safaris. The trail was both demanding and restorative, echoing the uphill journeys many have faced through cancer diagnosis, treatment, survivorship and caregiving. Some walked in reflective silence, others in pairs, chatting or supporting one another through the tougher climbs.
“There’s something spiritual about walking in sync with others who understand pain and joy,” said John Goma, who was a caregiver to his mother.
Along the way, survivors shared their stories raw, but full of hope. For some, this was the first time in months their bodies had been challenged outside a hospital corridor. For others, it was a step toward reclaiming confidence, purpose, and joy.
“Cancer drains both the body and the mind,” said Churchill Otieno, Navigation Officer at KILELE Health.
“What we’re doing here is helping people rebuild physically and emotionally in the company of those who get it. Walking with community improves the quality of life during survivorship. It reconnects us to ourselves, each other, and the beauty around us.”
Why It Matters
The KILELE Challenge isn’t just a fitness initiative, it’s a movement. One that reimagines cancer recovery as a holistic journey, one grounded not only in medicine, but in community, nature, and intentional movement. Each hike builds a deeper sense of connection reminding us that healing thrives where compassion meets motion.
The KILELE Challenge is planting seeds of strength and solidarity in Kenya’s cancer care continuum. The Ngong edition reaffirmed what began at Arboretum: that when we move together, we rise beyond fear, isolation, and stigma.
